Sí Bheag Sí Mhór
About the Tune
'Sí Bheag Sí Mhór' is a traditional Irish tune. It's often difficult to find recordings of, despite being known. The name means "little fairy hill" and "big fairy hill." It is believed to be linked to a local legend about a battle between fairy inhabitants of two neighboring hills near Lough Scur in County Leitrim.
Some sources attribute the tune to Carolan, and it is thought to be based on a song called "The Bonny Cuckoo." It can be heard on Planxty's first album and was also played by Liam O’Flynn.
There's some debate about the best way to play it. Some versions are faster and upbeat, while others are slower and more plaintive. Traditionally, the tune is considered to be in 6/8 time. Some transcriptions have incorrectly labeled it as a waltz in 3/4 time.
Many musicians have adapted the tune for various instruments including the tin whistle, flute, cello, ocarina and harp.
Please note: Some interpretations of the tune's meaning and origins are based on speculation and local rumors discussed in online forums.
